Introduction

We can all be agents of change. But sometimes the challenges that surround us make it hard to know where to begin. The film Ai Weiwei: Yours Truly aims to inspire viewers to take action in the struggle for human rights at home and abroad. It starts with a simple and direct expression of empathy: the sending of a postcard.

The misconception of totalitarianism is that freedom can be imprisoned. This is not the case. When you constrain freedom, freedom will take flight and land on a windowsill.
— Ai Weiwei

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.
— Margaret Mead

The choice to put pen to paper and reach out to a president, parliamentarian, or prisoner is a leap of faith in the idea that one human voice can help shape the world. It is a courageous choice to take injustice personally.
— Jasmine Heiss, Former Senior Campaign Manager, Amnesty International USA
